Grant Gustin Says He’s Ready For His Time As The Flash To Be Over

Grant Gustin opens up about how he is ready for his time as The Flash to be over after starring as Barry Allen for nearly a decade in the Arrowverse.

Grant Gustin opens up about how he is ready for his time as The Flash to be over. The Arrowverse is facing the beginning of the end as the franchise has been existing on The CW since 2012. While most of the shows have either ended or been canceled, The CW still has The Flash for one more season. The final season premiered this week, setting up Barry Allen’s last story in the Arrowverse. With only 12 episodes to go before The Flash season 9 comes to an end, the series has a lot of story points to wrap up for its cast of characters. The season premiere set up the arrival of Red Death, who will be one of the final big bads for the Scarlet Speedster.

As bittersweet as it is for The Flash season 9 to mark the end of the show, its lead is ready to reach the finish line. In an interview with E! News, Gustin opened up about saying goodbye to The Flash after having played Barry since 2013. While it is not for any negative reason, Gustin looks at finishing The Flash as akin to the experience of graduating from high school. It’s very much bittersweet for the Arrowverse lead to conclude this chapter of his life as he gets ready for the next one.

I’m ready for it to be over. And that’s not for any negative reason. It’s like when you’re getting ready to finish high school and—granted I don’t know what college I’m going to after this, I might not get into college—but you’re excited to wrap up and move on to the next phase of your life. I’m ready emotionally and my family is ready to just kind of move into the next chapter together. I never had a real expectation, I’ve never tried to visualize how it would end after all these years. So, I have no idea what to expect from this last one, whatever script I receive in my inbox is what I’ll accept as our story and then move forward with.

Could Grant Gustin Return As The Flash In The Future

The Flash Season 9 Arrowverse Earth Prime

By the time The Flash comes to an end later this year, it will be the longest-running Arrowverse series on The CW, with a total of 184 episodes. While The Flash season 9 may be Gustin’s last year with the show, that doesn’t necessarily rule out a return in the future. The bigger question is where Gustin’s Flash could show up next. Given the state of The CW’s scripted shows commitment for future seasons, there will likely not be any more superhero series on the network.

However, there is always the larger multiverse that allows Gustin to reprise the role of The Flash. As the Arrowverse is facing its end, so is also the DCEU that is getting replaced by the DCU. With James Gunn and Peter Safran in charge of DC Studios, a new era for DC movies and TV shows is approaching. While the DCU will focus on a new take on the Justice League heroes, that doesn’t rule out Gustin popping in through multiverse stories.

Gunn even teased when revealing the DC movies and TV shows last month that the multiverse is still something DC Studios is taking into account. In theory, that means The Flash TV show could always be factored into the DCU if Gustin’s character crossed over to the film franchise. After all, Crisis on Infinite Earths already set a precedent for that by having Gustin and Ezra Miller’s cinematic Flash meet during the Arrowverse crossover. But for now, viewers can continue to catch The Flash season 9 every Wednesday on The CW for a couple more months.
