Flashdance to Receive 4K UHD Release, 40th Anniversary Theatrical Run

The 1983 classic romantic drama dance movie Flashdance will receive a 4K Ultra HD release and a brief theatrical run to celebrate its 40th anniversary, Paramount Home Entertainment announced on Wednesday.

To coincide with the 40th anniversary of its release, a newly remastered version of the film — approved by director Adrian Lyne — will be released on April 11, 2023. The new release includes the remastered film on Blu-ray, access to a digital copy of the film, and legacy bonus content. This includes an interview with Lyne about the film, how the team behind the movie came up with its look, the theatrical trailer, and more.

Alongside the 4K Ultra HD release, Flashdance will also briefly return to theaters, with select cinemas showing the film on April 26, 2023 and April 30, 2023. Tickets for that special engagement will be presented by Fathom Events and can be purchased on their website or by heading to any participating theater box offices.

Originally released in 1983, Flashdance starred Jennifer Beals as a young dancer who works at a steel mill in Pittsburgh alongside her boyfriend and dreams of becoming a ballerina. The film was a smash hit when it released, garnering more than $200 million against a $7 million budget, and would become an influence on other films in 1980s, including Footloose, Purple Rain, and Top Gun.

Alongside the film’s two Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing, the movie’s soundtrack was also a massive success. Composed by the legendary Giorgio Moroder, Flashdance‘s soundtrack included hits like “Maniac” and “Flashdance… What a Feeling,” the latter of which won singer Irene Cara an Academy Award.
